What price Radiohead's latest offering?

It was the music and media event of 2007. Having reached the end of their six-album contract with EMI, corporate rock behemoth turned avant-garde obscurantists Radiohead announced they would be releasing their seventh LP, In Rainbows, online. The price? Whatever the listener was prepared to pay. As the band’s website patiently explained to the incredulous buyer: “No really, it’s up to you.”

Whether the move was a revolutionary gesture by a band long guilt-ridden by their complicity in the commercialised dystopia their songs bemoan, or a gimmicky marketing ploy by an act past their creative prime, it caused a sensation, generating febrile speculation about the ‘death of the music industry’ and even at the most conservative estimate, millions of pounds in revenue for the band (without any of it having to go to that pesky middleman, the record label)...
